Spectrophotometry
Varian Cary 5
Our laboratory is equipped with a Varian (now Agilent) Cary 5 UV-Vis-NIR spectrophotometer. Even today, it delivers performance that surpasses many current standard systems in terms of precision, wavelength range, and stray light suppression. The proven optical design, which is also used in its successor (the Cary 5000), allows for reliable measurements down to a photometric density of 6 Abs in a wavelength range of 175 nm to 3300 nm (UV-Vis to NIR), with a high wavelength resolution of <0.04 nm.
The Cary 5 is a dual-beam spectrophotometer. The light source can be selected from either a halogen or a deuterium lamp. After passing through a dual monochromator, the light is split into a sample beam and a reference beam. This compensates for light source intensity variations and other fluctuations in real time, guaranteeing excellent baseline stability. A classic photomultiplier (PMT) is used for the UV-Vis range and a Peltier-cooled PbS detector for the NIR range.
Possible applications
- Measurement of transmission and absorption (extinction) in solids, coatings, and liquid samples.
- Precise determination of the optical band gap of semiconductors and nanomaterials.
- Time-resolved monitoring of chemical processes.
- High-precision concentration determinations, even for samples with high optical density.
- Indirect particle size determination via plasmon resonance and Mie scattering.
The SENpro spectroscopic ellipsometer is available for measuring reflection spectra in the VIS-NIR range.
