Terms of use and how to access
General Terms of Use
- The University of Vienna's laboratory and workshop regulations must be observed.
- Eating and drinking are strictly prohibited in laboratories.
- Personal protective equipment must be worn.
- Hazards must be avoided.
- Laboratory and equipment users are responsible for any persons they bring with them, such as internship participants, and must ensure that these persons are familiar with and comply with the local regulations and the University of Vienna's laboratory rules. These accompanying persons are not required to complete safety training, but they may not work alone or unsupervised in the laboratory.
- Only appointments listed in the calendars accessible on the website are valid. Please ensure that your desired appointment is correctly entered. Deleting someone else's appointment from the calendar is prohibited and will result in the revocation of your access privileges.
- The Faculty Center will not send reminders to users regarding appointments.
- Independent use of the laboratories at the Faculty Center for Nanostructure Research is permitted only after agreeing to our terms of use and completing the associated safety training. Users must at least pass the "General Safety Guidelines for Faculty Members" test. Depending on the equipment, further tests may be required. Depending on the equipment and laboratory, users may also be required to complete a one-time on-the-job training session. These are detailed in the terms of use for each individual device. All tests must be repeated at the beginning of each year to maintain access to the Faculty Center.
- Access to the laboratories is controlled via an NFC card or an NFC fob. The card or fob must be activated regularly at one of the faculty's exterior doors, otherwise it will be automatically deactivated. Lending NFC cards or fobs is prohibited and will result in the revocation of access authorization.
- If a publication uses data measured at the Faculty Center or images taken here, the Faculty Center must be acknowledged, as the number of Q1/2 publications produced with the support of the Faculty Center is a criterion for our university funding. We suggest the following text: “We acknowledge support by X, Y and the Faculty Center for Nano Structure Research at the University of Vienna…”
- If a member of the Faculty Center staff has contributed to a publication beyond providing training on a measuring device, this person must be listed as a co-author in the publication.
- The data from each of these publications must also be submitted to the Faculty Center.
How do you get access to measuring devices?
When using equipment at the Faculty Center for Nanostructure Research, a distinction must be made between two scenarios. Some devices can be used independently after initial training, while others cannot.
For devices that you can use independently, the procedure is as follows:
- Please log in to u:Cloud and, if you haven't done so before, to the Servicedesk. This will make your u:Account visible on these platforms so we can register it.
- Contact the person responsible for the device. This person will then schedule an appointment with you and provide training.
- Following this training, the person will open a ticket confirming that you have been trained as a new user in the University Servicedesk. This ticket will then be forwarded to the head of the Faculty Center.
- You will now receive two emails: one granting you access to this ticket and another requesting you to agree to the terms of use in our Moodle course and complete the necessary safety training. You can enroll yourself in the Moodle course. Details of the required training can be found in the terms of use on the website for your device. You can view the ticket at any time to check its status.
- Please inform us once you have given your consent and completed the training by adding a comment to the ticket.
- We will verify that you have completed the training and then grant you access to the u:Cloud calendar for your device. We will also request that the Dean's Office grant you access to the necessary doors. If you do not have an NFC card and belong to the Physics department, you will need to obtain one through your group. If you belong to the Chemistry department, we will issue you such a card. A key form will be sent to you via this ticket. Physicists will have access to our rooms via the corridor with door 3338. Chemistry students can access the building via the entrance at Strudlhofgasse 2A and our entrance via the rear staircase, door 3360. Each of these steps will be documented in the ticket, and the ticket will only be closed once all steps are completed.
- Once your card or fob is activated for access, you must regularly activate or update it at one of the faculty's exterior doors.
- To use the equipment, you must first reserve it in the u:Cloud calendar.
- Enjoy your measurements! Please report any problems to the person responsible for the equipment.
For equipment that you are not authorized to use independently, such as the SEM, you must contact the responsible person. They will coordinate with you and schedule a measurement appointment.

The Faculty Center for Nanostructure Research (FZNano) is located on the third floor of the building at Boltzmanngasse 5. This entrance is wheelchair accessible and leads directly to the elevator. Access is also possible via the former main entrance at Strudlhofgasse 4. Once on the third floor, simply follow the arrows marked on the floor plan.
Once you arrive at the entrance, please ring the bell on the right side of the door frame. You can then open the door as soon as the buzzer sounds. FZNano is located behind the first door on the left side of the vestibule. One of our staff members will open this door for you. Please wait a moment.
How do I access my measurement data?
Access to the measurement data, as described below, is only possible from the IP address ranges of the Physics and Chemistry faculties and the university VPN. An eduroam Wi-Fi connection is not sufficient. If this is not possible for you, you can alternatively take the measurement data with you on a pen drive or receive it via the ACONET file sender. However, both of these options are only available through one of our employees. Pen drives must not be plugged into the measuring PCs.
Windows
You access the server containing the data from your workstation using the SFTP protocol. To do this, you need to download and install a program like WinSCP. Start WinSCP, create a new connection using "New," and fill it in as shown in the image.
It is important that the hostname (131.130.30.190), port number (22), and your username (the one you normally use to log in to the measuring device in Windows) are entered. The protocol must be set to SFTP, and SCP access must be disabled. If you do not enter your password, you will be prompted for it during login. Once you have successfully logged in, you will see your home directory and can copy data from it to your workstation. It is not possible to delete files or directories remotely.
Linux
You access the server containing the data from your workstation using the SFTP protocol. To do this, you need to install a file transfer tool such as FileZilla with the help of your package manager. Start FileZilla and fill in the fields in the "QuickConnect" bar as shown in the image.
It is important that the hostname (131.130.30.190), port 22, and your username (the one you usually use to log in to the measuring device in Windows) are entered. Once you have successfully logged in, you will see your home directory and can copy data from it to your workstation. It is not possible to delete files or directories remotely.
Alternatively, you can also access your data using the command:
sftp username@131.130.30.190
